Job Description:

This position is responsible for the development, utilization and maintenance of the necessary data flows, models, and software required for modeling the economics of the US’s largest regulated thermal and renewable generation fleet and a $6B multi-commodity fuel & power portfolio. Applications in this domain include forecasting fuel requirements, evaluating the grid impact of renewables, optimizing economics of battery storage and more. We are looking for a talented individual that can help automate data pipelines, create robust UIs and data visualization to help the organization make the best data-driven business decisions

Responsibilities:

  • Develop code to automate data flows from market data providers, traders, and engineering to run large generation fleet optimization models and to generate production-quality reports
  • Create interactive dashboards and reports to maximize the value of data and forecasts in business decision making throughout the organization
  • Create UIs to streamline interaction between analysts and production models
  • Establish and manage tools and practices to optimize performance of large data applications including on-premises and cloud databases
  • Take ownership of existing or new models and analytic tasks. Evaluate assumptions, accuracy, and performance of models. Frequently update/maintain models as technical and business requirements change
  • Present models and analyses to technical and business audiences. Communicate/educate and train at all levels in the organization
  • Follow best practices for model governance and business continuity including version control, robustness/fault tolerance, model documentation, and peer training
  • Ensure all work products and reports comply with both internal and external audit and regulatory requirements
  • Serve as an expert in translating complex data into key strategy insights and valuable actions.
  • Discover business narratives told by the data and present them to other scientists, business stakeholders, and managers at various levels.
  • Develop and test heuristics.
  • Create and run models.
  • Perform data exploration and data mining.
  • Create business intelligence, dashboards, visualizations, and/or other advanced analytics reports to adequately tell the business narrative and offer recommendations that are practiced, actionable, and have material impact, in addition to being well-supported by analytical models and data.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong programming skills in data science/mathematical software packages such as MATLAB, Python, SAS or R; MATLAB and Python expertise strongly preferred.
  • Practical experience developing dashboards in data visualization tools such as QlikView and Power BI
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and VBA Practical experience managing data in traditional (Oracle, SQL Server) and/or cloud databases (AWS). Able to create tables/views and query large databases with minimal assistance
  • A general understanding or strong interest in utility, power, gas, oil or coal industries
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with ability to communicate technical subjects to a wide range of audiences
  • Familiarity with mathematical optimization techniques and production cost models
  • Familiarity with timeseries analysis, regression, machine learning, Monte Carlo simulations
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to relate them to the products or services the company is producing.
  • Understanding of and ability to use programming languages like Python and SQL (Structured Query Language).
  • Strong knowledge of basic and advanced prediction models.
  • Data mining knowledge that spans a range of disciplines.
  • Strong exploratory analysis skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to bridge the gap between data science and business management.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and is detail oriented.
  • Mastery of statistics, machine learning, algorithms and advanced mathematics.

Required Qualifications:   

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in statistics, physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or management of information systems.
  • Work experience in addition to degree: 1-3 years.
  • Working knowledge of statistics, programming and predictive modeling.
  • Working knowledge of code writing.
